Historically this town has an important place in the Croatian history. In the 13th century a Vinodolski Zakon ( Vinodol Statut) was created by the house of Frankopan, a nobal Croatian ruling family at the time. That was the first legal Croatian document proving regional Independence and its importance which was written in old glagolitic script. Frankopans built the citadel with the stronghold and today their grandiose buildings, churches and castles can be visited in the whole area.
Habsburgs took over the region in the 16th century and in the 19th century they have started to develop tourism in the area. Again Novi’s unique position with it’s crystal clear sea waters and closeness to the mountains attracted the nobles to start building their holiday homes.
The tradition continued in the 60’s and 70’s when Yugoslavia encouraged tourist developments and it was possible for the professionals to acquire the land and build their holidays homes.
The town has 4 supermarkets, a large drug store, 2 petrol stations, a pharmacy, 2 banks, several ATMs, bus station, several exchange offices, small food market and various smaller shops, many selling beach equipment.
Restaurants are numerous, offering predominately traditional continental and Mediterranean food such as variations of grilled meat or fish, Italian cuisine can be easily found and there are a few hunters lodges that offer wild meat and game.
The tourist board of Novi Vinodolski ensures every year a rich cultural program that consist of classical concerts, festivals, town tours and exhibitions.
Apart from usual sea activities, boat tours are popular way to explore the coast line and the nearby islands.
More active visitors can explore several National parks and lakes, mountain of Ucka and peninsula of Istria and even Venice that is only 3 hours drive away.
